So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter
Than the Sun”
This is the lyrics to the well-known song by Fun <We Are Young>, a cover by THreshold that came in first for the Central Singapore Community Development Council’s GET OUT 2012 People’s Band competition. Their competition video garnered 5,019 views at press time – Less than a month after it was posted on YouTube and had 69 likes that crowned them champion.
Hailing from Temasek Hall, one of the six Halls of Residence in the National University of Singapore, Threshold is a 16-member band. 23-year-old lead singer Gary Song explains, “It’s a band in Temasek Hall where everybody gets together.”
He adds, “I joined the band in year 2 after seeing the poster in hall and got through the auditions.”
However, only a part of the band is featured on the competition video that was judged through online voting.
On singing for the band
Asked about their music style, Gary explained that they play both pop and rock songs, and in his own words, “Songs that are more popular with the crowd”. He described how he becomes a totally different person on stage – Both loud and engaging, a stark contrast from when he first begun.
The change was apparent in the We Are Young competition video where he cruised through the song that ended with a light-hearted NG cut.

On THreshold’s Upcoming Performance
“We will be performing Always by Bon Jovi and Sing by My Chemical Romance,” he says. “The finale to the whole performance will be our winning cover We Are Young,” he adds.
As the competition was solely based on votes, We Are Young is an apt choice for the finale and a definite hit with the crowd. The performance will be a showcase of the top 10 bands of the competition and also feature veteran local bands like 53A.
“I will like to thank all our fans for their support,” Gary says. “I also hope to share the passion for music and show our fans what THreshold can do.”
