“I wanna run wild, bare-footed on the concrete ground
I wanna feel the Earth move, feel the warmth of the sunrays fade
I’m ready for a change, I’m ready for a brand new start
Today I’m gonna give my all and make it count”
These are the lyrics from Tay Ke Xin’s first self-penned song <Someday You’ll be>. It was a moment of flow for the 24-year-old, who described her inspiration for the song as a ‘first song-writing epiphany’. Not a bad first attempt and an apt one for the spunky songstress, who finally, after a long struggle, decided to quit her events job at a local telecommunications company to switch to music full-time.
A tough journey
From her blog, she writes about how the journey of being a musician has been fraught with self-doubt, uncertainties and fear. However, she continues to live for the moment and the performance adrenaline every single time she sings.
For those who have not heard of Kexin, she is the proud co-owner of Sparkle Live Music, a company who specializes in live music events. With more than 5 years of singing experience under her belt, she has sung at the Elle Awards, Esplanade and the annual Sentosa Jazz by the Beach event. In 2011, she wowed audiences at the Taiwan Super Idol, where singers from all over Asia compete for a spot on the show.
Currently, apart from singing at weddings, Kexin is the resident singer at Switch by Timbre on Thursday nights and Quarubar on Friday nights.
“The past year has been good so far, I had the great honour to be the guest judge for my JC’s talent competition and also guest performer for Stardust, a nationwide competition which I joined during my university days,”
“I was also fortunate to have been endorsed by a bag brand Tocco Tenero and was Toshiba’s brand ambassador for their recent campaign.”
Ke Xin’s path to stardom seems to be smooth-sailing and her gamble seems to have paid off. Her first album will be released next year, with songs mostly composed herself. Audiences can also expect a lot more shows next year with her original compositions.
"Love and Marriage"
“It inspires me to believe in love and marriage because I see happy couples all the time,” she says. “I have been subconsciously misled into believing that marriage is all rainbows and sunshine.” She adds, “Though my logical mind knows the reality about love and marriage, a large part of me still very much believes in it, anything can work out as long as you put your heart to it.” Her take on love and marriage shows her tenacity for not only her singing career, but also her personal values and goals.
Firstly, Ke Xin has seen wedding couples that she has sung for get divorced and yet remains hopeful. Secondly, she has set high goals for her to achieve in 5 years – To become a successful entrepreneur and more importantly, a singer, an international one travelling abroad for shows and performances.
She refuses to jinx it though by commenting in jest that “she is crossing her fingers” on this.
Her Dreams and her upcoming Album
“I’m seriously dreaming,
hope you don’t mind!”
“My dream performance venue will be the National Day Parade – I hope someday I can sing the national day song in front of the entire Singapore population,” she exclaims.
“Then on to international stages touring around the world!”
Perhaps that is highly possible for the vivacious singer though, because Ke Xin’s sister Tay Ke Wei is a signed artiste who has released several albums internationally.
She has good musical influences too - Her father plays and teaches the Chinese violin, er hu, and the Chinese flute, di ji.
